Be Prepared for the Freezing Temperatures with Foreman’s

Prep for freezing temperatures

As weather forecasts call for our first freezing temperatures of the season across North Texas, make sure you are prepped and ready to meet the frosty temperatures.  Before the hard freeze hits mid-weekend, visit us at Foreman’s General Store today. We have all the supplies you need to protect your garden, your animals, and, of course, you and your family!

Freezing temperatures occurring early in fall or late spring are usually more damaging to plants than freezing temperatures in mid winter. Keep your garden plants and shrubs well-protected when temperatures stay below freezing for more than a couple hours or overnight. Foreman’s carries garden frost blankets which help keep plants insulated and prevent freeze damage. Also, reapplying mulch will provide additional insulation for plants and soil during a hard freeze. Container plants should be moved inside or in a protected area.  Water your plants, especially container plants, before a freeze moves in to ensure plants stay hydrated.  Remember to cover up your outdoor faucets– make sure the spigot is turned off with any hoses removed— we have foam and heavy duty insulated faucet covers to keep these from freezing.

Take the extra steps to make sure your livestock animals and family pets are protected from the cold, too! Make sure they have plenty of feed and water and provide extra shavings and hay for stable animals, including your chickens. If your dogs spend most of their time outdoors, make sure they have adequate shelter from rain and wind. We have have variety of pet shelters and doghouses available but when conditions are especially cold, wet and windy, it’s always recommended to bring your pets inside.

Foreman’s also carries plenty of de-icers, salt and ice melt products in the event our never predictable Texas weather turns icy. A little prep before freezing temperatures move in will make your home more energy efficient too. We have window and door insulation as well as caulk products. And, Foreman’s has plenty of propane for heaters, pinon wood for fire pits and, of course, Honda Power Generators if you need to go big on power.  If planning to be outdoors (perhaps cheering on your favorite team or in a blind somewhere?), make sure you’re dressed appropriately—including hands, head and feet. Improper clothing and prolonged exposure to wind and moisture are the primary causes of hypothermia, which can be fatal. Hypothermia can develop even when temperatures remain a few degrees below freezing— so, as mom says, “Bundle Up!”

Stay ahead of freezing temperatures with a visit to Foreman’s General Store— we have mulch and frost blankets, hay, shavings, deicers, doghouses and more.  Come see us today before the cold sets in!
